bootcamp on a portable drive
Can I install bootcamp on an external drive with a piece of windows only CAD software on it run this on my mac and also access the CAD software on a windows machine in the offfice ?

The problem you have is that Windows can't be installed on an external disk (Microsoft's restrictions), so you can't do that. Also, Boot Camp only works with your internal hard disk because of that

Forget this. You can't. You can install OS X on the external drive, but not Windows because of the same problem that before
When a friend of mine attempted that he was not able to install Windows on the external drive even after he installed OS X first. In his case it still objected that it wasn't an internal disk.

About your only alternative if the disk in your Mac is too small to install Windows is to install a larger disk in your Mac so that you have enough space for both OS X and Windows there.

Thanks for the answers. I tried to install bootcamp on my internal drive and it wouldn't let me told me to run disk tools or something so I thought maybe a clean install on an external as I don't want to mess with my internal
Does your internal disk have multiple pratitions?
If it does Boot Camp is unable to create a partition for Windows on drives that have more then one partition.

According to BootCamp Assistant in Mountain Lion 10.8.3, you CAN install Windows to an external disk. Please let me know where I misinterpret:

I do not see where External Disks are even mentioned in that box.
Perhaps there lies my misinterpretation. Where it says "multiple hard disks" I thought it was irrespective of the connection medium. I ordered a thunderbolt drive not intended for bootcamp, but was tempted to give a try when it arrives.
