Feb 17, 2013 1:35 PM in response to jasongrowby Russ H,You should post this in the Final Cut Studio forum to get your best response.
They will probably ask for some more details. Like whether there is an error code with that error message.

Feb 17, 2013 2:02 PM in response to jasongrowby Studio X,Things that cause FCP gastric distress :
• editing non-native material - anything other than ProRes, HDV or DV
• editing stills that are CYMK or greyscale
• editing stills that are larger than 4000 pixels in either dimension
There are many others as well.
Where did the material come from?

edit: also: what version of OSX, what computer are you using, where is the media stored?

Feb 17, 2013 2:54 PM in response to Studio Xby jasongrow,Much appreciated... The files are from my Canon 5DMarkIII. Working on an imac 27" with 16Gb RAM OSX 7.5.5... the files have are .mov files just as they came out of the camera. There was only the General Error and the sudden inabililty to use my canvas. I can't even call up the window when this particular project is open. Files are on an external drive.

Feb 17, 2013 3:04 PM in response to jasongrowby Studio X,★HelpfulThe camera records in h.264 format - a decidedly NOT FCP native format.
Convert the files to ProRes first using Compressor (ProRes LT is just fine), then create a new project and bring the converted files into FCP to edit.
