HOW TO CAPTURE FULL-RES IN QUICKTIME????

Hi

A friend of mine who doesn't have FCP needs to capture full-res DV Quicktimes of DV & DVCAM tapes.

However, when I select "device native" in the Quicktime Recording prefs, Quicktime captures a 640x480 movie, not a 720x480! I encounter this issue despite capturing from several different decks.

Now, the 640x480 recording looks squished; when I manually change that recording's resolution to 720x480, the image appears to be the proper aspect ratio.

But why isn't Quicktime capturing in DV's proper resolution to begin with? Please advise.

Simple answer:
Don't use the new "One Click" recording feature found in the Mac version of QT Pro if you wish to further edit the file in DV editing apps.
The button says that it will create a .mov file. Quicktime doesn't use the "rectangular" pixels (wrong phrase but you know what I mean) found in a DV source file.
Slower computers may also notice a significant "frame drop" when making these recordings.
The file created by QT Pro is correct. A 4:3 file should be 640X480 in dimensions. It is only when these 4:3 files are imported into DV editing app (iMovie, FCP) that you notice the change.
Since you must have QT Pro to make these "recordings" use its Movie Properties/Visual Settings window to change the dimensions.
If you use a DV source you are better served by importing the file using iMovie (or other apps).
Square pixels vs. rectangular pixels.
Your friend should import the .dv files using a DV editor.

Sorry. My budget doesn't allow for the price of Apple's "High End" DV editors like FCP.
But now (resized) they look correct. Wonderful, as it proves (sort of) my point.
Sounds like your files are "really DV" but FCP can't "recognize" the .mov format.
Odd.
Why not skip the QuickTime import entirely?
Export DV to FCP and see what happens.
I suspect that the QT Pro "capture" may have dropped frames or other issues.
You'll probably get better answers in the FCP Discussions page.

actually imovie does something weird to those dv files that makes them really hard to edit in FCE and FCP the problem with importing is that you probably picked "default" codec of h.264 for saving the movie which would certainly make FCP or FCE hiccup (they dont even like mpeg2 very much)

you should pick the DV codec so that you are not rencoding (as QT kirk said)

it is (based on quicktime) but in my experience codecs that are optimized for highest quality and lowest bandwidth (such as mpeg-2 & h.264) can be difficult to use as source material for editing i would only use them if you have no better (converted less) originals to work with.

as far as choosing the codec i think you may be looking in the wrong window or something i mean when its encoded it is in dv format so make sure you aren't trying to export should be just a save.

It (One Click Recording) is a feature of QuickTime Pro (on a Mac, only). QuickTime is not a DV editing app (by import, anyway). Use a DV editor if you want a DV source file.
A "proper" DV editing app will take all the time it needs to generate an imported file. You say 30FPS and that's what you'll get.
The "One Click" .mov file may drop frames at import and the format will be either "device native" or "other". Neither is as good enough to import a "raw" file unless you have a very powerful Mac. And it will not be DV.
One Click recording is a "pony show". A feature that very few will utilize and a "Pro" should avoid.
