Keynote movies on mac and iPad

I have a keynote presentation on my mac that include videos in .mov format. These movies don't play in keynote on the ipad. What movie format can I use that will play on both mac and ipad?

Is MPEG-4 the same as m4v?

MPEG-4 is an Motion Picture Expert Group format

m4v is an Apple format similar to MPEG 4 and is used for iTunes video

Ok, I have converted .mov to m4v, which play in the ipad. But I have two problems: the first is that the converted movie looks "dirty" (less crisp that the original, colors seem to bleed). Secondly, to fit the movie into the standard frame size, QT adds black bands at the top nd bottom.
