Backup SACD with iTunes or Disk Utility?

I've just bought quite an expensive audiophile CD:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002B250U/qid%3D1147715352/202-7482746 -3346218

I'd like to back it up now without any losses. In the Finder, it looks like a normal audio CD, so where's the additional information? Will I lose it if I back such music up as AIFF? Thus, should I copy audiophile CDs with Disk Utility or Toast instead?

Thanks a lot!

Peter

In theory Toast or Dragon Burn should be able to make an exact duplicate of the disk. Even the partitions that can't necessarily be seen by Mac OS X. I've done this with game discs before, and when I used my copies in either Windows or Mac OS X they showed up just as they should. I don't know why it wouldn't work for an audio disc either. But I've never done it so I could be mistaken.

There are many kinds of "audiophile" discs, so this all just depends. As already discussed in this thread, SACDs can't be copied (apart from the normal CD audio layer, if present). HDCD is yet another in a long list of better-sounding CDs. These contain 20-bit audio, and the best that iTunes can handle is 16-bit.

What's really the most important thing, in my opinion, is to make a normal CD audio backup (a standard audio CD) of these discs when possible, and keep the original disc in perfect condition. It would be highly unlikely that a person would even have stereo playback equipment of playing back most of these special format discs, so most of the time, consumers get zero extra benefit from them, and they just play back like regular audio CDs anyway.

My question is simply: Which way do I have to go / which app to I have to choose if I want to backup $ 30 CDs, e.g. 96 KHz / 24 bit recordings, DMM disks etc. I mean: : 100% identical backups without any losses.

If neither iTunes nor Disk Utility can do it, is there a Mac app that can? Maybe one that copies without any data conversion, bit for bit?

If I get onto your nerves, just ignore me.

The SACD question is answered. You missed that I'm not talking about SACDs any more. Regular audio CDs of higher quality that my drive CAN read as any other PC drive. I imported the music into iTunes already (AAC 128). And I copied such a CD with DiskUtility - not knowing what's been lost. (One of my Magnepan loudspeakers is damaged, so I can't hear the difference at the moment.)

Anyone who can come up with knowledge instead of polemics is kindly asked for one simple answer: Will iTunes / Disk Utility lose information of such 98/24 CDs during AIFF import / volume copying? If yes, is there an alternative?

Thank you very much!
