My speaker quit working as well. When I took it to the place where I bought it. They stated it was a problem apple is having with iPhone 4S. They replaced my phone for free
It's an I5. The head phones work as normal. The phone was in an inside pocket while on bike ride, so the humidity levels where up. However, the phone is in a protective case. Didn't think it got wet. Unfortunately, I'm 5 hours away from the nearsest apple store.
Remove any lint/debris from the headphone jack.
Clean the dock connector.
Try plugging and unplugging a pair of headphones several times.
Reset or restart the device.
If the problem continues, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

Tried your suggestions to no avail. I'll take it to an apple store next time I'm in a big city which will be no time soon. A modern problem I guess.
