Why won't Aperture display .NEF photos from my Nikon D800?
My Nikon D800 .NEF files will will not display at all. An error message "this format is not supported" is all that shows up.
Aperture 3, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I have a D800 and no problem with NEFs. With Aperture open, click About Aperture, and report the version of Camera RAW installed? Also, version of Aperture 3?

If you're running Aperture 3.4.3 and OS X 10.8.2 it should work.
Are these images you imported a while ago? If so, try selecting some and selecting Photo->Reprocess Original which will force Aperture to re-generate its rendering (in case you imported them before you had the right version of the camera RAW update).
Aperture 3.4.3
RAW Camera 4.04
Sorry! Should have included the info.
These are new photo files just loaded into Aperture yesterday.
The NEFs should be working with those stats. What setting of RAW is set in the camera?
Is the Library Managed,or Referenced? If the latter, where are the Reference originals stored?

What happens if you look at one of the files in the Finder or via Preview? If you can see them there and not in Aperture it points to an Aperture issue. If you can't see them then it points to an OS issue.
14 bit, lossless compressed.
I'm new to Aperture so I don't know how to do either of these procedures. I have been cruising aroud the program all day trying to find a way make the files visible. No joy.
Are you using Nikon Transfer software to pass the images to your computer? ... If so, and you are not using the most current version, this can cause some problems with the resulting NEF files not being visible in some situations. That is why I always transfer the images using Finder and drag and drop them to the folder of choice ... never have a problem with file recognition as long as you have the latest OS X camera updates installed.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I have the latest versions of Transfer and View, and use them to transfer from the camera to my Mac.
Try moving over a few images manually using Finder and see if those images work ... it seems Tranfer can move some image metadata around that is not consistent for third party software ...
Do you have a compact flash card reader?
You should try it. Get a reader, put the CF card into it, and connect it to the computer. Then try importing from Aperture.
The odds are quite good that Nikon Transfer or other method you're using to try and get the pictures from your camera to Aperture are corrupting them. You should not transfer direct from camera: It's slow as all getout and if you're using 3rd party transfer software it's got "bad idea" written all over it.

Try importing without using the Nikon software. Also try viewing one of the images in Preview, that should fail also as the RAW conversion software is in the OS but it would be a worth while test.
Many experiences have been shared on this forum related to cameras with more than one card slot being problematic when directly connected to the computer. I never connect my D800 directly but rather only via a card reader. But were I to connect to the camera, I would only have one card in it at a time. Same when reformatting -- I remove first one card and then the orther.
The suggestion to test with a card reader is a worthy one.

I hadn't thought of the dual card capability as a potential problem. I will try using my card reader to see if that helps.
I back up to an SD card, and have an Apple reader, along with a generic SD reader. I'll try both.
Thank you
