Find My Friends mile radius question

Why does the app only show my friends in a 5 or 7 mile radius? It used to pinpoint locations to a specific address or a location and now I only get a 7 mile radius with the dot in a location that I know the person is not at, like in a river or the middle of a footbal field when I know they are driving in town.
