iPod (5th Gen) doesn't charge on Windows 8

Encountering a strange issue with my iPod 5th Gen (80 GB) under Windows 8 Pro with iTunes 11.01.12.

When connecting the iPod via USB, Windows 8 immediately reports "There's a problem with this drive. Scan the drive now and fix it." If I select "Scan and Fix", Windows 8 claims to "find errors" and offers to "Repair this drive". The repair finishes in a under a minute but reports "No errors were found".

When I open iTunes, it connects fine and syncs without issue. However, the iPod doesn't seem to charge. I can leave it plugged in for hours, or overnight, but won't charge. If i plug it into a wall outlet or my Windows Vista PC at work, it will charge normally.

I've tried restoring it, but no luck. And otherwise the iPod works fine.

This seems to have been resolved after I upgraded to Windows 8.1. Perhaps there was an issue with the Windows 8.0 iPod driver....?
