Would an Airport Express iron out my gateway's wifi issues if used as a stand-in?

I am currently lumbered with a low quality all-in-one router supplied by my ISP, (Alice/O2, Germany) the DECT phone is connected directly to it and we currently have 3 to 4 devices connected to its wifi broadcast, including an Airport Express, Apple TV, MacBook Pro and Compaq notebook.

The wifi broadcast is unreliable to say the least, the connection to my MacBook Pro has always been fine, but it regularly drops the connection to the AE and ATV. It's driving me crazy, watching a movie or trying to listen to music via the AE has just become tiresome, there are constant drop outs in connection.

My question is, could an Airport Express, if connected directly to this router with a CAT5 cable stand in for the router as a wifi hub?

Hoping you can help; having checked that it is possible to switch off the wireless broadcast on my ISP's gateway device, I have ordered another Airport Express.

I'm wondering what you mean with the following: 'Connection Sharing Off (Bridge Mode)'

Does that mean the Airport Express will not be used in bridge mode?

With the initial set up of the new AE, will it make a difference if I connect it (via ethernet) to my MacBook Pro or to the existing router?

If you could provide a slightly more detailed walk through I would grateful.

Thanks edex67, does O2 in the UK use PPPoE? This part of the support sheet seems to suggest that i'm going to have problems because O2 here in Germany do.

If you connect to the Internet using PPPoE, you can’t set up the base station or Time Capsule as a bridge. When your device is using PPPoE, it’s acting as a router and distributes IP addresses to clients on the network using DHCP and NAT.

  1. Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder, select the device you want to set up as a bridge, and then click Edit.
  2. Click Network, and then choose Off (Bridge Mode) from the Router Mode pop-up menu.
