How to Smith off the iPad

Apple say I should switch off using the button on the side and not the cover.

iPad 2, iOS 6.0.2

Are you trying to turn off the screen or power the iPad off entirely. The cover will only turn off (and on) the screen. The button on top/side/end will just turn the screen off/on if you tap it, or power the whole device off or on when you hold it down.
