Selection box in iTunes music library no longer appears

With great trepidation I just installed the latest iTunes version 11.0.1 (12). The check box option in the music library no longer works or at least it does not appear. The "Show list checkboxes" is ticked in the Preferences and still no check boxes show in the library. Because of that I am unable to select what I want to play. How do I get that to work? Or is this a bug in the new version?

Thank you.

Sigh. That did not work, either. I unchecked "Show List Checkboxes" and closed iTunes. Opened iTunes. Re-checked "Show List Checkboxes" and closed iTunes, opened iTunes...Nope. How does one re-install iTunes? By un-installing and downloading again from the Apple site?

This is why I installed the new version with great trepidation. Almost always something doesn't work. Feh.

The checkboxes don't appear in itunes 11, and there is no option in preferences to make them appear. I tried to restore the old compact view but don't see how or where to do that. However, if you find a file you want to include or exclude from sync, right click on it. The bottom option in the pulldown menu is to check or uncheck it.
