After a restart, having done minor upgrades to safari etc. , prompted by software update, there is only a gray screen (no icons, images whatsoever. ) have tried rebooting, unplugging, starting from external hard drive with back up, no change.

I have the same problem and have also recently updated safari!
Im running mac os 10.7.5 on a 2008 intel imac.
I get a grey screen at bootup and it shows me the apple logo then hangs up.
I can boot successfully in safe mode and also disk checks suggest the hard drive is ok. Very annoying because this looks and feels like a software boot issue!!
Why do I only get a gray screen at startup ?
