How do I get data from an SDXC card onto my Mac?

My school just purchased a new video camera (JVC ProHD Model GY-HM150U) that uses SDXC cards for data storage. I purchased an SD Card Reader (Kodak A271) to transfer the data to my computer. Upon interting the card into the attached reader, I get the following message: The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.

I first tried this on my iMac (mid 2007) and then on my laptop (early 2011) and got the same message.

Normally, a card reader or its contents should just be readable; however, I did a search and came up with way too many red flagged (unsafe websites) sites for Mac drivers for your reader and many references to Windows XP. I don't quite understand that since you do not need a driver. Since I don't go visit unsafe sites, I was not able to figure out the driver situation.

So, has your SDXC card been properly formatted in the camera?

Have you tried to plug in the reader and then go to Disk Utility and see if it is showing there - if it is greyed out, can you manually mount it? If so, do you have options to format it? (Although, the card should be formatted in the camera at least initially).
