My HP Officejet 8600 has connected wirelessly to my new iMac but the scanning facility on the printer is unavailable. How do I rectify this?

I have downloadeds the HP Utilities Software but it is being rejected as not being an Apple product so basically redundant. What next?

It is redundant. As of Lion and now Mountain Lion, all scanning functions are performed at least three ways:

  • through Preview > Import from Scanner (under Preview's File menu),
  • through the Image Capture app in your Applications folder,
  • through System Preferences > Print & Scan > select your scanner > Scan tab.

No scanner functions were lost, they have just been relocated.

I'm not sure this is correct. I've just gone from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.

With SL, when doing the preview scan, Preview would automatically select anything on the scan platen and, if there were several items on the glass plate, it was intelligent enough to select them all separately all at the same time. It selected those objects accurately too. I hardly ever had to move the edges around to improve the selection. I had the choice to scan a single one of the objects by selecting it, or to scan all objects at one time without having to preview scan again for each one.

It was really impressive. Far better than the HP software that came with my Photosmart C7280 A-I-O. (On the other hand, the HP software could OCR far better than anything Apple came up with).

I think I made a mistake installing ML. All Preview can do now is preview scan. It can't intelligently detect the edges of any objects at all now. Not even just the one. I just get the whole glass plate preview scanned and have to manually select what I want by moving the crop bars every time. And even that can be tricky at times.

As for using 'System Prefs' to do a scan, I didn't know this was possible so I have just tried it. Well I got as far as Print & Scan okay but sadly there was no scan option available for me to try - not even a greyed out button.

I anticipate I may need to go back to SL to get half decent scan preview selection back again. Which is a shame.
