lost contacts

My iphone 4's screen flashed the other day, now all my contacts are just emails, no numbers. the other funny thing is they are emails i never had on my phone to begin with. i plugged it in to try and restore to a prior backup, but now itunes only pulls up apps. i cannot get into anything to try and look up prior backups, music, or calendar. i am afraid of resetting the phone and losing what little is left on it without knowing i can get a prior back up. the only thing that is on my icloud backup is conctacts, and they are also all messed up, contacts i never had on my phone. someone please please help...
