Phone number for imessages on ipod touch 3g?

I recently received on ipod touch 3g which I'd like to associate with my another iOS devices and my apple id. I've got iOS 6 on my iphone 4s and mountain lion on my computer. If i set up iMessages with the iPod touch as well, will it sync messages across devices. If so, will it be associated both with my email address and phone number registered in my AppleID and receive all imessages sent to both my phone number and email address? Or do all devices have to be on iOS 6 for the imessages sent to my phone number to be received on that device?

Each device will receive all messages. Whether address to the email address or phone number.. However, if a phone sends you a text vis SMS like from an phone with out the Apple messages app, that message will only go to the phone.

Or do all devices have to be on iOS 6 for the imessages sent to my phone number to be received on that device?
