Has anything been solled on the KB?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

what do you mean by solled? if you meant spilled then no it just randomly started one day when i rebooted it. i have tried holding the shift key when the grey apple screen comes up to safe boot it but no sign of it being in safe boot!
Are you sure you don't have an older portable that has a numlock button? Might check this:

Hope this helps.
Sorry, I did mean spilled.
I doubt it's a software problem, do you have a USB KB you can plug in & test with?
yeah it works fine with a USB keyboard but i like to move my laptop round so its kind of impractical
That was just a test to tell what the problem is, seems you need a replacement KB for your MB.
i tried it out but yeah think my 5 year old mac is just getting tired 😟
thanks for the suggestions though!!
