My iMac plays a loud "chord" when starting up.
I tried all means to get rid of it: I turned off the sound (from the keyboard), I diasbled all alerts (from System Preferences) and finally I plugged a pair of earbuds in the earphone jack and redirected all audio to them.
Nothing worked and I am still "greeted" by the same sound every day and every night during the power-on sequence.
Can anyone please help?

Oops, Startup Ninja failed!
Last night I was greeted by the same loud chime when powering up my iMac... and Startup Ninja tells me startup chime is OFF.
Keeping the "Speaker Off" key pressed does not work either: I'm using a wireless keyboard which is "discovered" long after the boot sequence is over.
So, back to case one...
So noone is able to help?
I tried Startup Ninja again and it only works for the next startup, so now I have to remember to "activate" Startup Ninja before every shutdown... surely there must be a better option?
Lowering the startup chime has always been dealt with using special software hacks.
Tthese hacks still work with OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, but appear to no longer work with Lion or Mountain Lion.
Sorry, you'll have to wait for someone to crack this issue.
