I got a cheap leather folio case off amazon for $12 I believe, that activates the smart cover function...so there are affordable alternatives out there. Might end up being easier to look for something like that then spending hours trying to rig something up.
Magnets in the cover activate magnetic switches built into the iPad. A lot of covers offer the feature - my Sena leather case does it and a lot of folio type cases will do it, no modifactions necessary.
Thanks. I was trying to see how I could modify my existing iPad cover by installing a magnetic strip or some way that would allow me to keep my existing cover. I just need to find out exactly how to do this. I guess trial & error might work.
Or go into a shop and look at some folio covers to see just where the magnets are placed. My Sena Florence leather folio case has two small round, thin magnets sewn under the inside leather that frames the screen and holds the iPad in place. They are placed right down at the bottom corners of the cover (you can see the outline of them throught the leather bezel cover piece). Bestbuy carries this case, and numerous others that have the same feature.
