Updating iPod trouble!!!

Okay, so right now my iPod is at 4.3.5. And I sorta forgot to update it when I got it two summers ago. How can I update it to the newest version? Every time I try to get it to update iTunes says "The Ipod software update server could not be contacted." I've researched and tried a million things, but nothing seems to work... HELP!!
