ipad 2 suffering frequent kernel panics

My ipad 2 wifi has been restarting at random for the last few weeks. I've tried several restores, and that didn't help. This led me to beleive that it's a hardware issue, and I began to dig into the panic and crash logs that the ipad transfers to it's linked computer. Sometimes it'll get stuck in a restart loop and it'll restart 5 or 6 times before coming back up to the lock screen.

Below is the last crash report. All the panic.crash logs have the same thing in common: the following string. the only difference is that the hex string after cpu 1 caller is different every time.

panic(cpu 1 caller 0x8c691397): "i2c2::_checkBusStatus XIP is still set (SDA is probably stuck low); last read status 11010100 xfer 00000008 fifo 00000000\n"

I have had seven kernel panics today. The last one happened when I tried to back up my iPad 2. All the other times, it was not connected to anything. Yesterday I used it for about two minutes before the iPad froze and restarted on its own many times when trying to use it. This did not happen very often prior to iOS7.

Is this problem related?

When an update stalls I used to be able to delete the app and begin the download again. Now I leave it on and open for downloads to be completed in 12 hours and that still isn't enough time.

You may well have a hardware problem. However...

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...

Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.

If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."

At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.

If you're unable to do the Restore and you have IOS-6 or lower, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here. Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.
