My MacBook Pro Isn't Playing DVD-R's

Hmm-very strange. ALL MBPs come with superdrive, so they should play those DVD-Rs with no problem... they are in standard dvd format right?

ERVS, welcome, it is unusual like you say the only thing I suggest is look the DVD over and make sure there are no scratches or fingerprints at all Superdrives are notrious for being very picky about media. Make double sure it is clean.
Depending on the DVD, if it was a burned DVD, and done on a PC or the Software used to burn it, might have been set incorrectly, for your Mac to recognize it.(PC) only.
If it is a Commercial DVD Movie it should play.

Well... I authored a DVD using the provided iDVD 6. I then had a resulting .img file. I burned that .img file with Disk Utility, and that worked fine.

But the resulting disc won’t mount on my MacBook Pro. On insertion, there’s no icon on the desktop. Apple DVD Player says (from my memory) “No supported format” or something like that in white text over a black screen.

Strange thing is: launching VLC and selecting File: Open Disc works perfectly.

I used Toast 6 to burn multiple discs (all same brand) from the .img file. Same thing. Burn completed fine, but won’t mount. It’ll mount on a regular DVD player, on a PowerBook G4 1.33GHz 12", a PowerBook G4 15" Aluminium 1.25GHz. And watchable too.

My relatives have since received those discs, and can watch them. So, not a big drama. But might be, if they start owning MacBook Pros.

I haven’t followed this up muchly, since.

Call up AppleCare, they'll replace the drive for you.
