Hi There,

Is it possible to submit video podcasts with links to the videos uploaded in youtube? Our company has a bunch of videos uploaded in Youtube which they want to be available in iTunes as well. We do not have a webserver available to host these videos ourselves and are wondering if we can use the ones uploaded in YouTube. All the available documentation seems to state that this is not supported by iTunes and the feed should have a direct link to the media with a proper extension like .mov etc.

I tried created a blog and having a link there to an Youtube video as a test and am getting the below error when I try to test the feed.

"We had difficulty downloading episodes from your feed".

Below is the URL to my feed:
http://podcastingyoutube.blogspot.com/feeds/post/default

Please let me know if this is possible. If not what are the alternatives if we do not have a webserver to host the content ourselves. We also do not wish to use the free hosting sites like Podbean etc.

Thanks,

Krishna.

No you can not use videos uploaded to Youtube for a podcast feed on iTunes.

Your feed is not valid at all. http://feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fpodcastingyoutube.blogspot.c om%2Ffeeds%2Fpost%2Fdefault

Your best course of action is to host at a podcast host like libsyn.com

Also - do not use .mov files for video podcasts go with .m4v - h.264 files.  Best size for video podcasts on iTunes is 640 x 360.

    Hi Robert,

Thanks very much for your quick response. I had the wrong URL before. Below is the link to my feed URL.

    http://feeds.feedburner.com/blogspot/LYueU

Are there any other podcast hosts that compare to libsyn.com?

    Thanks,

    Krishna.

    Hi Krishna,

That feed will not work either - again you need to have a proper podcast host for your .m4v files for iTunes.  Files hosted on Youtube will not work with iTunes.

You need to make sure the podcast host you pick supports Video files - some only support audio.  Libsyn supports both as well as PDF files.  And you need to make sure the host specifically says they support byte-range requests - that is a requirement from Apple for iOS devices.  Libsyn does support byte-range requests and is 100% iTunes compliant.  Not sure about other hosts.

    Hi Robert,

In the iTunes documentation it says .mov is fine. Is there any place which I can use for referring to come with specifications that the videos should conform to for best results for a video podcast?

Anything I can give to the team making the videos?

They should be in .m4v format and a size of 640 x 360? Is that all?

    Thanks,

    Krishna.

    Hi Krishnap,

.mov files are fine if your audience is 100% on macs.  Same as .wmv is fine if your audience is all on the PC.

I recommend .m4v format as it works well on both Mac's and PC's and iOS devices and Android Devices.

What is recommended is  .m4v - H.264 codec files - 640 x 360 in size.  If they are using final cut - tell them to use the export to iPod settings in Compressor or if they are using Quicktime pro - also use the export to iPod settings.

That should be enough info for them to get it set up correctly.

    Regards,
