iPad and iPhone message and FaceTime sharing

iPhone 3GS and new iPad. Can't get phone number to show on iPad messages or FaceTime. Followed directions from apple site. Log in log out on all devices. iPhone shows email and phone number for messaging. iPad still only shows email and no phone for messaging or face time. I logged in and out and powered off all devices. I did get it to work n wife's iPhone 5 and new iPad so I know it can be done. Only difference is I still have a 3 GS phone so no FaceTime on it.
