Using OS X 10.7.5, Safari 5.1.7 won't open

When I try to open and use Safari (version 5.1.7), I get this error message. Reloading OS X 10.7.5 (Lion) doesn't resolve the problem. (I can't find a way to install Safari alone without installing the entire operating system.) Can any of you suggest how I might fix this?

Problem solved (finally) by downloading and installing a new Lion OS X 10.7.5 from the App Store.

Unfortunately, what didn't work were

  • Installing a saved early version of Lion I had stored on a USB drive, followed by updating the iMac OS to the most current version of Lion
  • Installing Safari 6.0 Lion selectively

Thank you all for your advice and help with this problem. I really appreciate the responsiveness of the Mac brotherhood.

Two points.

Safari 6 is nowhere near as well thought of as Safari 5.1.7 ... so it's probably as well you can't use it.

All the same there are many, many examples of people using Safari 6 with Lion in the forum questions.

Most have had troubles, not all the same, and the general advice has been to reinstall Lion, software update and work from there.
