Explicit search domain required?

Hi,

At my workplace we are using a product named Eracent to scan and require polls via a service running on our Macs.

Simply installing the Eracent agent on a Mac NIB and attaching to the LAN doesn't allow the Mac to respond.

The immediate local AD domain is listed in light grey text with the Search Domain box, and listed as the "domain" when using terminal command 'scutil --dns', but only IP addresses for the nameserver [0], [1], [2].

After explicitly entering the several domains, then the box/Mac reports as expected, and the scutil command then too lists 'search domain [0], [1]'.

I know from experience that this works, though how can I explain it to my peers who don't have Unix experience?

Thanks.
