Why does my ipad all of a sudden stop responding to touch

Did you try to reset the device by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches after installing new software

my ipad all of a sudden will not respond to the touch screen so I can't use the slide to unlock, can't power it off or anything so it is not functional. what does this mean? Or how do I get it working?
