Will MacBook Pro work with Logitech Z680 speakers?

Will MacBook Pro work with Logitech Z680 speakers?

I have the new 17 Pro and I tried a coaxal cable with my Logitech Z680 5.1 speakers. I connected it to the pod and there is no response or recognition of the Mac. The other ooption is optical which I hear is the best way, but can anyone confirm that it actually does work before I lay out the cash?

I using my 15" MBP with an optical connection to the Z5500 speakers and it works great! It was a bit of a trick to find the Toslink to optical minijack adapter but a trip to the big city fixed that.

I saved some desk space and bought the v20 speakers work great using a USB connection.
