Now my device can't even recover... I lost a tremendous amount of important data on this iPod such as my artpiece for Esthetics. Any tips on how to break out of the recovery mode and restore all data or at least a lot of it?
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
The iPod will likely be erased. You can restore from backup.
So there's no way of saving data like a movie?
Have you tried using any other backups of your iPod?
Just delete the old backup and make a new backup
Note that the backup does not included synced media like apps, music and synced videos. It does include videos taken by the iPod.
I was updating my iPod touch 4g to iOs6.1 and it froze.
