If you're just getting a server error it could be that there's something wrong with Apple's verification right now. If you got a username/password not matching type error then something else could be wrong. Are you able to go to Apple's site below to make sure everything matches?

Was able to go there, and I was able to sign in with my apple ID afer restating the set-up process. Not sure if something happened when connecting to wireless the first time round or is apple's verification service was down for a period of time. But all is well now. Thanks for the help.
Glad you were able to get in but sometimes verifying with that direct site puts your passwords back in line on your devices
Yes I am having the same exact problem as the original post. Username and Password are definitely correct, I can sin into my account at apple site, am currently signed in and posting to this forum yet on my new Mac Pro 13 inch during the setup I continue to receive the error message "couldn't sign in because of a server error. Try signing in again." I've tried several time and restarted the setup process and continue to get the error. Very frustrating. Trackpad and keyboard have actually seized up a couple of times in the process. This is my 5th Mac Pro but so far not impressed!
I'm also experiencing the same problem. I just upgraded the OS to X on my Mac Mini, and there seems to be a problem connecting to the internet. Connected fine to my Time Capsule/Router, and the Router is seeing the internet according to my MacBook Pro on the same network (this post is evidence that I'm seeing the internet!). But when I connect to the router, I get the error message:
"Your Mac isn't connected to the internet." Try Again or Continue.
If I select Continue, when I try to sign into my iTunes account it gives me the server error message, which is presumably because it's not seeing the internet. Have tried it several times and confirmed the password is correct. Also, I can see and share screens with the Mac Mini from my MacBook Pro, so clearly the connection to the router is working as well.
Help?
Same problem for me, tryed restart and everything...Just checked in with Apple customer support and they told me they had issues with this features! You just need to hit connect without id then once you access the home screen just go to preferences>icloud and connect your account there.
I got this error when setting up a new iMac. I now beleive the reason was that I had already restored accounts and files from a Time Machine backup, and it then connected me to the Apple ID during the login. It is a flaw in the setup process that it didn't check for that and skip the Apple ID step.
