Why doesn't the speaker work when using apps after I updated my iPhone 4S to 6.1.2

I now couldn't hear music without using the headphones. It worked very well before I updated the system

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.2

I've seen many people with this issue. Poor iPhone 4S users. Anyway, as long as its not on silence, it should work. If not, it is a software glitch if it worked before and I am not able to help you. Hopefully Apple patches this soon.

Same issue after I updated to 6.1.2. Ringer/music doesn't work on speaker but does using voice memo. The phone is now useless (due to apple) I can't get an appointment at the apple store for days. I've tried to get help in apple community's but "roaminggnome" who was rude, was no help. We have no appreciable help in sight either. Each update has had worse issue than the previous for me. Help!

I upgraded my iphone 4S to IOS 6.1.2. Since doing this I've completely lost all sound function on my phone. Also, the volume buttons have become disabled. Every update Apple has been doing has been making the situation worst. I'm eligible for an update and have been on the fence about getting another iphone or getting a Samsung Galaxy 3. The Galaxy is looking like the better choice.

My volume issue has been resolved. Played with my phone all day... tried plugging in power and headphones, unplugging (maybe 100 times, lol), rebooting the phone and issue persisted.

Then tried this...was listening to TuneIn Radio, without closing, pausing or stopping the stream, I unplugged the headphones and the missing volume slider re-appeared, paused, but visible. Pressed play and it worked. LOL

Checked Music, Video and yes...Angry Birds...now the volume slider appears as if nothing was ever wrong. Hmmmm. Scratching head but happy volume in now working.

Immediately after updating my 4s to 6.1.2, I lost my volume bar and ability to use the volume buttons on the side of the phone that control ringer volume, etc. I did not lose the ability to hear phone calls or the alarm. This issue mainly affected my ability to listen to music and videos.

In my instance, the volume bar and ability to use the volume buttons returned when I did not have service to make phone calls, etc.

I tried restarting the phone and resetting the settings. No luck. I also tried blowing into and cleaning out the ports. Still no luck.

When I described the issue - and the interplay with the service - my boyfriend suggested that I put the phone into airplane mode. When I did this, my volume bar and ability to use the volume buttons returned. I then switched off airplane mode while keeping the music playing and - so far - I've restored my volume bar and ability to use the volume buttons while my phone has service.

I'll repost if this solution stops working.
