Welcome to the Apple Support Communities

You can't back up your photos in iCloud. Photo Stream is a sync service, and the photos you add to Photo Stream will be deleted in 30 days after adding them, so this is not an option to back up your photos.

I recommend you to buy an external drive and make backups of your Mac with Time Machine and/or Carbon Copy Cloner, so everything will be backed up, including your iPhoto library

ICloud does not back up your entire Photo library - only your Photo Stream. You should back up your photos to an external hard drive, CD, or flash drive. You can also use Time Machine to back up your entire computer including your photo library.

But you definitely do not want to have it just living in your iPhoto or Apeture library on the Mac. You really do not want to risk losing them, so they need to be backed up (and regularly) to a separate media source.

    Cheers,
