iPhone 5: 6.1.2 breaks 5 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity

Hi all,

after applying the iOS 6.1.2 update my iPhone 5 does no longer connect to my 5 GHz 802.11n wireless network at home. No problems with 2,4 GHz. My iPad 4 and iPad mini, also with 6.1.2, have no 5 GHz connectivity problems.

My router is an AVM Fritz!Box 7390 running 5 and 2,4 GHz Wi-Fi simultaneously.

Anybody else?

Best,

Thomas

Stupid me. After switching Wi-Fi in my router off and back on again the iPhone picked up the 5 GHz network w/o problems. Can't believe this.

I just did not think about the router because all my other devices (and I've got quite a few) had no problems at all, so I thought this could not be the culprit. But it obviously was.

Good luck to all the rest!

FIXED!!!!

I have iPhone 4s running 6.1.2 Everything worked great before the lovely update. My wifi did the same thing that everyone else's seems to be doing. It would not recognize my home router.

Evidently, in the update, Apple changed how the "Ask to Join Networks" button operates. Previously, I didn't have to have the button toggled to on, my phone would just automatically lock onto my router. I have fought and fought with this update. I have done several "network settings resets". I have even restored my phone twice. I have tried every crackpot, and not so crackpot, suggestion on these forums and NOTHING has worked. I could go to settings and connect to the router each time I used the phone, but it would only stay connected for a few minutes.

Today, I toggled the "Ask to Join Networks" button to "on", then opened Safari. My phone then asked if I wanted to join the network, I responded with "join". My phone has been on wifi all day! I left home and came back several hours later, and FINALLY... my phone locks on automatically.

Go to settings>, Wi-Fi>, toggle "Ask to Join Networks" button to "on". Then click on your router/network in the list.

I realize that everyone's problems are not the exact problems I had, but maybe this will help some of you having problems.

Good Luck!

Thanks! That worked for me as well. I'm using an Asus router and the 2Ghz network worked without issue. But it would not accept my password for the 5Gz network despite several attempts and "forgetting" the network all together.

Toggling Ask to Join Networks to On and opening Safari, I re-entered my password and it worked!

A little surprising that Apple would not catch a bug like this.

Perhaps your iOS update went bad in the installation. I'm not having trouble with Bluetooth either, so whatever problem you're seeing does not appear to be by design, it's not unusual to have iOS updates go afoul.

If you did the update over the air, maybe restore the iPhone from your computer to download the full iOS package and re-install it that way. Re-load your backup to save you some trouble, but if you still have a problem it could be a corrupted backup, which means restoring as a new iPhone and starting all over (I know, not fun).

And what is interesting comparing the updates is that via air = 107MB vs Itunes = 1.04GB. Not sure why the difference.

Well, sending the entire payload over the air is why there's a difference, only what's needed is sent OTA. However, with this update I had to be on Wi-Fi, I thought last time I did OTA it was over cellular.

In any case, you can imagine that installing a partial iOS update can have risks, so downloading the complete iOS package and re-loading may help. Hopefully your backup did not get corrupted in the process!

Tried on Airport Extreme and Time Capsule both using separate 2.4 & 5Ghz SSIDs. I carried a 4G HotSpot (http://www.clear.com/devices/details/id/devvoyagerle/name/CLEAR-Spot-Voyager-Red -Limited-Edition) which sits next to my Iphone and signal is 1-3 bars most of the time.

It is well appreciated to Apple Devs for fixing the Exchange Calendar issue with the new released but breaking needs such as Wifi and Bluetooth is not acceptable 😟 , and the fact that you cannot roll back to previous fw simply s***s.

Please apple fix these issues asap.

Note to self: My issues persist even after resetting the network preferences on the iPhone 5. Both iPads (4 and mini) connect flawlessly to the 5 GHz network.

I've asked on Google+ if more people have this problem and got a couple of feedbacks that everything was fine. Which is nice for those people but not for us here.

Haven't tried Bluetooth yet since I hardly use it.
