I have noticed the same issue.  I do not know for certain about the wifi turning off but I do know that even with the power nap option turned on and the laptop plugged in, that it hasn't backed up or checked for new emails when closed and sleeping.  I am not sure what the issue is.  I have read some people reinstalling Mountain Lion and that fixing their problem.  I'd hate to do that since I just finally got all my programs set up on my macbook pro.  I guess I can do a TM backup then reinstall the OS then restore my documents.  It sounds like a pain but maybe that is the only way?

I also noticed that finder was acting funny when I first got my laptop.  I had to restart it for finder to remember preferences etc.  I am not sure if that is also a symptom of what is causing this.

    Apple support article:

    Powernap - About

If you monitor the "More Like This" box (top right), other threads appear. Opening them usually displays other threads.

I looked through the other threads and also the about article but none of it seemed to pertain to my situation.  I have the new 2013 Retina MBP.  There is no SMC update for mine.  I haven't found another article in the discussions (yet) that is similar to mine except maybe this one.

It seems that power nap started working.  I am not sure what changed but it has started getting mail and backing up while the lid is closed.
