I updated icloud and lost contacts numbers and text messages - how do I restore

I updated my iphone 3 to lastest itunes update and lost contact numbers and text messages.

How do I restore back on my iphone?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 6.1.2

Which type of back up do you have, iCloud or iTunes.

I lost all of my text messages and other info stored onto my phone. Not sure how to restore. I've tried restoring from a previous back-up. but that didn't work. I lost very important information.
