My iphone 5 is trying to upgrade but iTunes is not available to me and my phone is now frozen asknig me to connect.

I am also having the same problem! I have a 4S and nothing helps. Even when I connect to itunes, it changes nothing and appears itunes now does not recognize my device. Help!

There is nothing you can do about it. You need to connect it to a computer running iTunes and restore it. It's in recovery mode.
