I'm trying to convert my Pages docs to Word docs, but they keep unzipping in Preview as tiffs instead of pdf. What is going on?

I only have MS Word due to work, so I don't have Pages on my new Airbook (my old Powerbook had Pages, and that's where I created most of these documents), and would prefer not to have to install it if at all avoidable. Thanks.

I don't have admin access on this laptop, it belongs to my current employer. To install Pages, I'd have to get my supervisor to approve its purchase, then the tech to install it. Could take weeks, if not months. The files I'm trying to open are from my previous freelance position, when I had my own computer and control over it.

I could recreate from hard copy, if necessary, but obviously, that'd be a waste of time if I can get them open in Word. If I can't get a useful response within a few days, I guess I have no other choice.

You can get to the pdf preview inside the Pages document without Pages, but it's a liitle involved. It might be better to try on a copy so you'll have the original to fall back on.

1. In the Finder, rename the Pages file to add ".zip" to the end (somedoc.pages should be renamed to somedoc.pages.zip).

2. Double click the renamed file. The finder will unzip it and produce a second file with the original name.

3. Right click (or Control click) on the new file and select Show Package Contents. A new Finder window will open

4. You'll see a couple files and a Quicklook folder. Inside the Quicklook folder is a file named Preview.pdf; that is the pdf version, which can be opened in Preview. You can copy the text (without its formatting) and maybe some of the images, which should at least help with reconstructing the document in Word.

This worked up til step 4, when I opened Package Contents, it only had a Thumbnails folder with a tiff in it and a Contents folder with PkgInfo that said this:

Last login: Thu Feb 21 08:19:09 on console

room_245_32:~ terihui$ /Users/terihui/Documents/Misc/Mom\ copy.pages.zip/Contents/PkgInfo ; exit;

/Users/terihui/Documents/Misc/Mom copy.pages.zip/Contents/PkgInfo: line 1: Pictures: command not found

logout

I no longer have the Pages disks, and cannot hook my old laptop into the network at work where my new laptop is. I'm not buying a hard drive, and the USB thumb drives I already own are not sufficient for what you suggest.

I'm starting to realize that there is some sort of glitch happening here, because none of the sites I've seen mention the tiffs that I have somehow generated.

That doesn't look like a Pages file. The Pages file package should have a buildVersionHistory.plist and an index.xml (which is the "meat" of the Pages document) and possibly copies of included images, as well as the QuickLook folder:

Do you still have your old computer? Why not open the documents in Pages on the old computer and export them to Word format, then put them on a thumb drive to bring them in to work?
