Does having a different iPhone's SIM tray in my iPhone void my warranty?

I sold an iPhone on eBay that had an AppleCare+ Warranty until October of this year. The buyer tells me that because the original SIM tray is not in the phone

(must've accidentally switched it ith another iPhone at some point,) the warranty is void. Is this true? Can't the actual phone's serial number be retreived by plugging it into a computer or opening the phone to see the serial number printed on the inside, or does this not matter?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1

Some models of the iPhone have the serial number printed on the SIM tray.

Well, yes. I'm pretty sure every iPhone since the iPhone 3G does. I'm asking if it matters if the serial number on the SIM tray doesn't match the device's actual serial number that is printed on the inside of the phone and in the phone's settings.

The 3GS does, but not the iPhone 5. I have heard of warrantee problems when the wrong SIM tray is in the phone. Maybe Apple interprets that as a sign that somebody has been working on the phone.

iPhone 5 gets around the sim card tray with serial number by having the IMEI/MEID engraved onto the back of the device.

Not having the SIM tray shouldn't void the warranty. Where did he get this information?
