Can I connect external speakers to my mac?

I have just normal stereo speakers. I also hve surround suond speakrs that I am wondering if i can connect. Can I connect surround sound?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I have hooked up my Vizio Sound bar with a Aux plug to my iMac head phone jack. So it definitly works! 😀

Make sure your computer can support outputting surround sound through the MiniDisplay Port.
