My iMac is Mid 2011 (as it says in the "about this mac" screen) but why can't I find the Airplay functions?

If you don't see the AirPlay icon in the menu bar, it's because your Mac can't find any Apple TV in your network. If you have an Apple TV connected to the same network as your Mac, try restarting the router
Thanks for the suggestion. But that didn't work either, any other ideas? I'm completely baffled...
Open System Preferences > Displays, and look at the bottom of the window. Do you see "AirPlay Mirroring"?
Nope...that's what's puzzling me, because mine SAYS it's a "mid 2011" model...so it should support Airplay, right?
In that case, you aren't using OS X Mountain Lion, because you have a compatible Mac. If you want to get AirPlay Mirroring, open App Store and purchase OS X Mountain Lion.
Make a backup before installing Mountain Lion, and check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
After upgrading, you will have the AirPlay icon in the menu bar
This is my iMac...10.7.5, that's not Mountain Lion? Sorry, I'm new to this...
You are using OS X Lion. OS X Mountain Lion is 10.8.x version

You won't have to reinstall your applications after upgrading, because everything will be kept. However, check if your applications are supported before upgrading, as I told you in my second comment
