Q: I have an imac intel 24" EMC 2111.

I have an old iMac intel 24" EMC 2111.Its a core 2 duo -2.16 Ghz. It will not boot, showing a file with a question mark flashing on the screen. A recovery disc was used and when running a system check, the following error message : 4SNS/ 1/ 40000000 THOP. Is this something serious, like the mother board? I dont have the original install discs so I cant try to reinstall the OS of that time. Also, could this model be used as a monitor for a laptop if no longer useable as a PC? I already have updated Macs, but like vintage models. Thanks. joeza

Yes it's something serious, you shoudl take it into an Apple Store or an AASP for professional diagnoses. Apple does not publish the error codes so we have no way of telling for sure what your error message means, only a tech would be able to help.

You could not use the model as a monitor with a PC, this feature is called Target Display Mode and was available with 2009 & 2010 27" iMacs using the mini display port on a PC. It is also available on 2011-2012 models using Thunderbolt ports to another machine with Thunderbold output, however connecting to PC's usually does not work.

IMHO it's time to hing about replacing the machine with a newer model.

    Good luck.
