Spinning Beachball - Best Next Steps

I am using iPhoto 9.2.1 with a fairly large library. After an import of a single photo, I got the spinning beachball.

I tried rebuilding everything (option-command on startup) and that seemed to work. But the minute I try to click on anything in iPhoto, the beach ball starts again.

I've read a lot of advice on this forum, but I'm not sure what my next steps should be.

I do have a time machine backup prior to the last import which I can back up from. Should that be my next step or should I manually rebuild the library starting with a new iPhoto library and drag everything over? Or perhaps something else?

Advice welcome. Thanks.
