Moved pictures from old hard drive but much more than I actually have !!

How is this connected to iDVD? Shouldn't you be in the iPhoto community?

to relocate an old iPhoto library to a new macine simply drag it to the pictures folder of the new machine and launch iPhoto

By picture file do you mean the iPhoto Libary? If so then yes, it was the wrong move. Delete your existing library and follow Larry's directions for moving the library from the EHD to the Pictures folder.

I downloaded my picture file from my old hard drive to my desktop and then dragged it to the left hand side of iphoto whilst it was open.

If by this you mean the iPhoto library then you did exactly what you must never do

Assuming that you still have the original iPhoto library simply move the eisting iPhoto library form teh pictures folder to the trash and copy the original iPhoto library to th epcitures folder and launch iPhoto as noted above

That is another symptom of the mistake you made - following the above directions will eliminate all of those issues and give you exactly what you originally had

Open iPhoto and select tehm - export as kind = original to a desktop folder and then import them into your new library when you have it working correctly

It does not ask - you use the kind selectiopn and set it to "original"

That depends on informaiton you have not given - in iPhoto '11 you can export keeping the event structure by clicking that option during export
