Final Cut Pro X 10.0.7 - Import Canon XF100 MXF Media

Hello!

I'm doing some various workflow tests and have run into a problem with one of my main shooting formats -- Canon's X300 XF100 MXF media won't import after I've copied the files off of the CF card to my working hard drive. The CF card with the original footage has long been formatted so I can't plug that in and import from camera. The Canon XF plugin has been installed on the computer.

Anyone out there have any ideas how I can import this footage? I shouldn't be forced to import directly from the card--that's not always possible as we sometimes have to dump footage on set and format the cards for shooting.

Russ et al.

The plugin is a no-brainer, obviously...the problem is in the folder structure as I've just solved my own problem:

Final Cut is extremely picky and the folder structure has to be as follows for it to recognize your Canon XF Footage:

CARDNAME

CONTENTS

  • CLIPS001
    • AA0001
    • AA0002
    • ...

If you're missing the CONTENTS folder, FCP X won't recognize the footage. Spelling and case need to be exactly as I've outlined.

Here's a screen shot to demonstrate:

Russ H,

Ok. So now that I've downloaded the newest Canon Plug-in for FCPX and I'm finally able to import the CF Card files I have saved on my Thunderbolt drive directly into FCPX without all this transcoding, I wonder...

Is this the best workflow/solution? Am I good or do I need to follow some of the older MXF info here and on the rest of the net? Will my final output be as good without transcoding to ProRes? I'm hoping so, but thought it best to ask.

Hi Russ,

I'm hoping you might have an answer for me...

Searching for a quick CF Card dump, I've tried saving my Canon FX100 file via card reader directly to my thunderbolt drive. However, even though the structure looks exactly the same as mentioned above, I am unable to archive or import any of the files into FCPX. Archiving/importing directly from the reader through FCP works just fine, but takes quite a bit longer.

I'm very uncertain as to why this is happening and what the difference might be.

Thanks!

I use an external drive for my media as well. I guess what I'm trying to acertain is if this is "my" problem and whether or not this workflow "should" work.

Now that I think of it, I believe the workflow did work for an evening when I first installed the plug-in. But at one point I renamed the folder (before I read the info here) so not every folder was called contents. I've been unable to import or archive since then.

Wondering if I should do a reinstall of FCP and/or the plug-in.

Also now wondering how if you have multiple cards to dump at once, you DO keep all the contents folders on the same disk. How would one designate what info is on each card and not have them overwrite each other?

I was able to do a quick check this afternoon – bringing these files into my boot drive.

MBP, running 10.7. Copied full card (Contents) to desktop and then imported successfully to event in User>Movies.

Also imported directly from camera into FCPX without issues.

Perhaps you could post a couple of screen shots: of your import window with the Canon folder open. A finder shot of the opened folder.

Russ,

I feel like a dolt...

It seems you need to capitalize CONTENTS. I had re-renamed the folder Contents. You live, you learn!

I do have another question, and I'm not sure about "Thread Ettiquette" so if I'm breaking it, I apologize to the rest of you.

I mostly edit in multicam mode, and I've recently upgraded from SD to HD. I now have a new iMac (3.4 GHz i7 with 32 GB of Ram, a 2GB NVIDIA GPU), use an external Thunderbolt drive (2 TB 10,000 RPM RAID 0) for my media, and use a separate 2 TB external drive to archive all my footage. I use ML ver. 10.8.4 and edit on FCPX as you know. 🙂 I'm shooting on 3 Canon XF100 cameras.

When I tried to edit natively in multicam mode with optimized media (but not proxied), FCP crashed twice. So of course, I decided to create proxies and everything worked fine.

My question is: with a decent setup like mine, shouldn't my system be able to handle mutlicam natively? Why all the crashing?

Thanks!
