Q: Hidden Protection bit preventing move of files, only copies?
Hello:
Using the migration assiatant we moved files from an 10.5.8 iMac 21.5 to a new 27" iMac running 10.8. When the user tries to move a file from one folder to another it makes a copy, it does not move the file like expected. If the user creates a new file say in word or whatever she can actually move the file but any file that was migrated over will make copies. Any Ideas or suggestions. Thanks, Rick

Right click on the problematic file and choose "get info". Have a look if under general section the flag "locked" is selected. If this is just 1 single file you can de-select that option and that should resovled the problem. If there is multiple files you need to use terminal to do it - full description is here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1402.
You might have to run this on your home folder. Open terminal and type:
sudo chflags -R nouchg /Users/YOUR_USER_NAME_FOLDER/
That should remove unwated flag from all files on your account.
