What of the specs of the media you're working with? How did you get it into FCP? Is it optimized?

    Thanks Tom

Just the usual, I am working with some photos imported from dropbox, also some video off a new Sd card. I notice now that the Event folder shows all the original clips I used to put on my timeline, but when I go to reimport they show black in the event window too.

I don't know what the usual is. Still images? How large? 8-bit RGB? What video?

Try trashing your preferences. Trashing the render files including the caches for events and for the project and reboot.

    Thanks Tom.

I had a friend help me do that and it did help. Still have more render files to delete but trashing preferences helped a lot.

I noticed that the project improved and the black view window returned to normal as did the event window when scrubbing. I deleted several photos that I had imported directly from dropbox and reimported them from my desktop, then began reworking the project. The video problem began to happen again so I quickly made a .mov file then re-edited the troubled parts and saved as a .mov again and it works fine.

I do want to do much more work with this project, now that the short is done, I want to make a 30 minute package but wonder how to avoid the black window issues.

Do you think it could be from having too many types of sources or do I just need to continue trashing render files in other projects?

It may depend on the speccs of the sources, but the couple you desribed shouldn't make any difference.
