Application Memory

I'm using a MacBook Pro (mid 2012 model). I'm getting error messages that I'm running out of application memory space on the startup disk, even with only 1 program open. Machine is running VERY sluggishly. Restarting helps a bit, but not for long. Where can I go to clean out any virtual memory?
On a possibly related note, Dropbox and Safari have been malfunctioning as well. Dropbox will frequently not be able to connect, and Safari locks up immediately when opened. Thanks for any help!
