Airplay does not work

Hi. I have a 2nd generation Apple TV. I can send things via airplay to it from my iphone and my ipad. However, neither my Retina Macbook Pro or Macbook Air can use Airplay. Both are compatible models, both are running Mountain Lion, but the AirPlay icon does not show up on the menu bar or in the display preferences.

Any thoughts on this?
