I tried what this said to do, but when I try to turn it out by using the brightening button, a box with a dash pops up and won't let me do anything. What does this mean?

Your room (ambient environment) is too bright. When the ambient environment is too bright, you cannot turn on the backlight of the keyboard, it would be pointless and it would waste energy.
It won't even turn on in the dark.. It use to allow me to have it on no matter how bright it was. Now it won't turn on at all.
Maybe it doesn't like you anymore. 😉
Reset the PRAM via the instructions on this page. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Reset SMC via the instructions on this page. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
The SMC reset may not be necessary, so do the PRAM first. If that fixes it, leave it at that and don't do the SMC reset.
